Where to go on holiday? I visited Lisbon.

Lisbon, the biggest city in Portugal and the current favourite of all city travellers, is situated on seven hills. That is why it goes up and down nonstop, and it is better to be trained, or use this nice yellow cable car. This picture was taken at the historic district of Bica, in Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo, where our apartment was located. Probably the most photographed street in Lisbon.

I have to be honest: Lisbon did not become one of my favourite cities, as for many others. But the Portuguese are the nicest people I have ever met and the food was delicious. So today, I would like to show you our best moments in Lisbon and give you some personal tips, if you enjoy good food. Maybe Lisbon will become your favourite city.

This is the lower end of Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo. Our daily way to explore the city, like the Time Out Mercado da Ribeira, the gigantic hall with countless restaurants. You should visit them once. It has an interesting atmosphere—it is very large, but also very noisy. I prefer the small restaurants and tapas bars.

“I recommend: Os Bons Malandros”

Very small tapas restaurant in the Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo. Yes, opposite of our apartment. Very cozy with an incredibly friendly staff. We had a wonderful evening, great food and good wine. It is absolutely necessary to book a table.

There are many beautiful façades in Lisbon. Here is one in Chiado. A hip neighbourhood, with many interesting shops, cafés and restaurants.

There is a lot of graffiti in Lisbon. Some are amazing, others not.

The view from our wonderful terrace to the suspension bridge Ponte 25 de Abril. We rented our apartment via AirBnB and there you can find a huge selection of great accommodations. This time I do not write about our apartment, like I did in my Tuscany post, because the apartment was perfect but the personal encounter was not.

“I recommend: Restaurant Momento”

A cozy restaurant in the Rua da Rosa with delicious food. Do not forget to book a table.

Everyone would like to take the cable car to drive up the Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo.

Beautiful house with the typical Lisbon tile design.

The Rua Nova do Carvalho, the pink street, is the meeting place for night owls. A perfect place to take a photo.

“I recommend: Restaurant Sea Me”

If you like fresh fish, then try the Sea Me restaurant. It is a direct hit!

Only the little tree survived. This beautiful house is completely decayed. But right next to it (picture below), you will find this beautiful building, right on the Arco da Rua Augusta, the Portuguese triumphal arch.

“I recommend: The Tropical Garden in Belém”

If you are in Belém, you can take a nice time out in the Tropical Garden, right next to the President’s residence, the Belém Palace.

*****

The tropical garden in Belém is, unlike the rest of the city, very quiet and lonely. Only a few peacocks liven the garden.

The 16th-century Mosteiros dos Jerónimos is worth a visit. We are not sightseeing tourists and never stand in long queues, but this monastery was worth it. And the queue was very small.

Opposite the monastery is the Belém Cultural Center with the Berardo Museum, which shows an incredible collection of modern and contemporary works of art. Picasso, Warhol and Miró, to name a few. Highly recommended!

“I recommend: Restaurant Pharmacia and the Paracetamol cocktail”

*****

An evening mood in the Pharmacia restaurant garden. It is located in the pharmacy museum, opposite the Jardim do Alto de Santa Catarina, the Miradouro (viewpoint) ‘Santa Catarina’ in Bairro Alto. The furnishings are reminiscent of a pharmacy. The small lobby of the restaurant looks like a doctor’s room. The mineral water comes in brown pharmacy bottles, and my favourite cocktails are named Elixir and Paracetamol. Well, is it not enough to make you curious?

View from the Praça do Príncipe Real in the Príncipe Real district. There is also the Embaixada, an outstanding shopping gallery with a focus on Portuguese designers.

“I recommend: The Embaixada concept store”

*****

The rooms of this palatial building from the 1800s were divided into several shops. A beautiful architectural interior, with Art Nouveau details. The view of the atrium from the top floor shows a nice restaurant.

“I recommend: LX Factory”

*****

If you want to do more shopping, I recommend the cool LX Factory in the Alcântara district. A creative hot-spot, housed in an old, down-to-earth factory ground. Here you find many individual shops, cafés and restaurants. It is a very own world in the middle of Lisbon.

The place is used as concerts venues, there is a vintage barber, a tattoo studio and a lot of graffiti art. My favourite was the Wish shop (photos below) with a café. The lovely wall stickers attracted me immediately. The entire café is decorated with the stickers, mostly from Poetic Wall, and you can buy them directly at the shop.
